چکیده

There exists a population of broad-line z∼2 QSOs which have heavily absorbed X-ray spectra. These objects constitute ∼10% of the population at luminosities and redshifts characteristic of the main producers of QSO luminosity in the Universe. Our follow up observations in the submm show that these QSOs are often embedded in ultraluminous starburst galaxies, unlike most unabsorbed QSOs at the same redshifts and luminosities. The radically different star formation properties between the absorbed and unabsorbed QSOs implies that the X-ray absorption is unrelated to the torus invoked in AGN unification schemes. Instead, these results suggest that the objects represent a transitional phase in an evolutionary sequence relating massive black holes and the formation of galaxies. The most puzzling question about these objects has always been the nature of the X-ray absorber. We present our study of the X-ray absorbers based on deep (50-100ks) XMM-Newton spectroscopy. We show that the absorption is most likely due to a dense ionised wind driven by the QSO. This wind could be the mechanism by which the QSO terminates the star formation in the host galaxy, and ends the supply of accretion material, to produce the present day black hole/spheroid mass ratio.

Is High Primordial Deuterium Consistent With Galactic Evolution?

Galactic destruction of primordial deuterium is inevitably linked through star formation to the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. The relatively high present gas content and low metallicity suggest only modest D-destruction. In concert with deuterium abundances derived from solar system and/or interstellar observations this suggests a primordial deuterium abundance in possible conflict with dat...

Ubiquitous Outflows in Deep2 Spectra of Star-forming Galaxies at Z=1.4

Galactic winds are a prime suspect for the metal enrichment of the intergalactic medium and may have a strong influence on the chemical evolution of galaxies and the nature of QSO absorption line systems. We use a sample of 1406 galaxy spectra at z ∼ 1.4 from the DEEP2 redshift survey to show that blueshifted Mg ii λλ 2796, 2803 Å absorption is ubiquitous in starforming galaxies at this epoch. ...

QSO Lifetimes

The QSO lifetime tQ is one of the most fundamental quantities for understanding black hole and QSO evolution, yet it remains uncertain by several orders of magnitude. If tQ is long, then only a small fraction of galaxies went through a luminous QSO phase. In contrast, a short lifetime would require most galaxies today to have undergone a QSO phase in their youth. The current best estimates or c...

Abundance Histories for Qso Absorption Line Systems

Abundance histories for QSO absorption line systems as a function of redshift are presented for all metals lighter than gallium. Coupling various conventional cosmological models with a simple, rst{order model for the chemical evolution of the QSO absorption line systems allows transformation of the observed abundance trends in the Galaxy to abundance histories for the gas in QSO absorption lin...

The cosmological evolution of the QSO luminosity density and of the star formation rate

We demonstrate that the evolution of the QSO luminosity density with epoch displays a striking similarity to the cosmological evolution of the field galaxy star formation rate, recently derived from a number of independent surveys. The QSO luminosity density at 2800Å is approximately one-fortieth that implied by the star formation rate in galaxies throughout the past 11 Gigayears (z < 4). This ...
